Creating Comics

Hi! I’m Claire Tomasi, cartoonist.

Claire’s Creating Comics presentation covers the graphic novel process of thumbnailing, rough penciling, tight penciling, inking, incorporating text, and lastly, color in terms of art development.  If Claire is speaking to a writing or English class, the talk centers around thumbnailing for organization, and three types of writing for comics, and the importance of dialogue and scene-setting.

Comics in its Social Context

Claire’s Comics in its Social Context lectures center around the social engagement and history of comics, ranging from the Comics Golden Age to Modern Classics, and how students can use comics and the illustrated narrative to express academic topics in multimedia.

Comics & Publication

Claire’s Comics and Publication lecture centers around the process of preparing a pitch packet, pitching to literary agents, and framing yourself as a writer and illustrator of graphic novels. Topics in this talk include self-publishing, webcomics, and traditional publishing, in addition to new publishing media such as Instagram and webtoon. This talk usually piggybacks off of the Creating Comics seminar, though can stand alone based on what the current curriculum offers in terms of creating comics instruction.
